When you hit the message limit
- Split it. Two messages read better than one wall of text anyway.
- Use an embed. A description holds 4,096 characters. Build one with the Discord embed generator.
- Trim formatting. Markdown symbols and custom emojis count too. Check the result in the text formatter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Discord message character limit?
2,000 characters per message, or 4,000 with Nitro. Bots and webhooks are limited to 2,000 characters of message content, but can put up to 4,096 in an embed description.
How long can a Discord embed be?
The title and author name can be 256 characters, the description 4,096, each field name 256, each field value 1,024 and the footer 2,048. All of that text together can't exceed 6,000 characters per message.
What is the limit for a Discord channel topic?
1,024 characters for text and announcement channels. Forum and media channel guidelines can be 4,096.
How long can Discord names be?
Usernames are 2 to 32 characters and nicknames 1 to 32. Server names are 2 to 100 characters, and channel, thread and role names up to 100.
Do emojis count as one character?
A simple emoji counts as one character here; emojis built from several symbols, such as flags, count as more. Custom server emojis are much longer than they look: Discord sends them as text like <:name:123456789012345678>, and all of that counts toward the limit.
