How to use the ANSI text generator

1

Type your text

Write your message in the text box. Line breaks are kept.

2

Select part of it

Highlight the characters you want to style. If nothing is selected, styles apply to all the text.

3

Apply colors and styles

Pick a text color, a background color, bold or underline. Use Clear style to reset the selection.

4

Copy the ANSI block

Click Copy ANSI block and paste it straight into Discord. The block stays under Discord's 2,000-character message limit as long as the counter does.

How ANSI colors work on Discord

ANSI escape codes come from old computer terminals, where a short sequence starting with the invisible escape character tells the screen to change color. Discord reads the same codes inside a code block tagged ansi:

text
```ansi
ESC[1;34mWelcome ESC[0mto the server
```

ESC stands for the escape character (Unicode U+001B), which you can't type directly. That's why a generator is the easiest way to write these blocks. The numbers between [ and m pick the style:

CodeEffect
0Reset all styles
1Bold
4Underline
30–37Text color: black, red, green, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan, white
40–47Background color, in the same order

Several codes can share one sequence, separated by semicolons: ESC[1;4;31m is bold, underlined red text.

Good uses for colored text

  • Highlighting a key rule or warning in a rules channel.
  • Status boards, such as green for online services and red for outages.
  • Small bits of emphasis in announcements, used sparingly so they still stand out.

For layouts beyond colored text, like embeds with images and fields, use the Discord embed generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get colored text on Discord?

Discord has no text color button, but it colors text inside a code block marked as ansi. Special ANSI escape codes inside the block set the colors. This generator writes those codes for you, so you only choose colors and copy.

Which colors can I use?

Eight text colors and eight background colors: black, red, green, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan and white. Discord doesn't support ANSI's bright color variants, and it uses its own shades for each color, which changed in August 2026.

Why is my colored text plain on my phone?

ANSI colors render in the Discord desktop and web apps. Support in the mobile apps has been inconsistent, so some phone users may see plain text in a code block. Don't rely on color alone to carry important meaning.

Why does the copied text look strange before I send it?

The block contains invisible escape characters (ESC[ codes). They're what Discord reads to apply the colors. Paste the block as-is and don't retype it.

Can bots and webhooks send ANSI colored text?

Yes. The block is ordinary message text, so it works in bot messages, webhook messages and embed descriptions, as long as the escape characters are kept.
