How to use the text formatter
Write your message
Type or paste it into the text box. The example shows a short rules post you can edit.
Format it
Select some text and click a toolbar button. Inline styles wrap the selection; headers, subtext, quotes and lists apply to whole lines.
Check the preview
The preview updates as you type. Switch between dark and light to check both themes.
Copy and send
Click Copy message and paste it into Discord. Copy without formatting escapes every symbol so it shows literally.
Discord markdown cheat sheet
Discord uses a version of markdown. Type the symbols and Discord formats the message when you send it.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
*italic* or _italic_ | italic |
**bold** | bold |
***bold italic*** | bold italic |
__underline__ | underlined text |
~~strikethrough~~ | |
||spoiler|| | hidden until clicked |
`inline code` | inline code |
[text](https://example.com) | a masked link |
# Header, ## Header, ### Header | large, medium and small headers |
-# subtext | small grey text |
- item or * item | bulleted list |
1. item | numbered list |
> quote | one quoted line |
>>> quote | quotes everything after it |
Code blocks
Put three backticks on the lines before and after the code. Add a language name after the opening backticks, such as ```js, for syntax highlighting. For colored text, use an ansi code block; the ANSI colored text generator writes those for you.
Things to know
- Headers, subtext, quotes and lists only work at the start of a line, followed by a space.
- A backslash stops formatting:
\*shows a literal asterisk. - Messages are limited to 2,000 characters, or 4,000 with Nitro. The counter under the text box shows your length.
- Timestamps like
<t:1798761600:R>show in each reader's time zone. Make them with the Discord timestamp generator.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make text bold on Discord?
Wrap it in two asterisks: **bold**. Use one asterisk or underscore for italics (*italic*), two underscores for underline (__underline__) and two tildes for strikethrough (~~strike~~). They can be combined, such as ***bold italic***.
How do you make headers on Discord?
Start a line with #, ## or ### followed by a space for large, medium or small headers. Start a line with -# and a space for small grey subtext.
How do spoiler tags work?
Wrap text in two vertical bars: ||spoiler||. Readers see a dark bar until they click it.
How do I show the asterisks instead of making text bold?
Put a backslash before the symbol, like \*not italic\*. The Copy without formatting button in this tool escapes every formatting symbol for you.
Can I use markdown links on Discord?
Yes. [link text](https://example.com) creates a masked link. Discord may show a warning before opening links to sites a reader hasn't visited.
Does formatting work in embeds?
Mostly. Embed descriptions and field values support the same inline formatting. Build one with the Discord embed generator.
