Embed with this color
Embeds use one solid color: #5865F2 (5793266).
The preview approximates Discord's dark theme; exact rendering varies a little between apps and displays.
How to use a color picker for Discord roles
Pick a color
Drag in the color square and along the hue slider, type a HEX code, or click one of Discord's preset role colors. On a phone, tap the swatch next to the HEX field to open your device's own color picker.
Choose solid or gradient
Switch to Gradient to choose a start and end color, the way a gradient role name blends across the text.
Check the preview
The preview shows the color on a username, a role mention, the member list and an embed. Toggle between dark and light mode, and watch the contrast note: below 3:1, names get hard to read.
Copy the code
Copy the HEX code for Discord's role settings, or the decimal number for embed JSON and bot code.
Paste it into Discord
In Discord, open Server Settings → Roles, pick the role, and paste the HEX code into the custom color field.
Want colors from your server icon or banner? Click Colors from image to extract a palette of up to eight distinct colors. The swatches update to show those colors in solid mode and adjacent-color combinations in gradient mode. The image stays on your device.
How Discord role colors work
A Discord role color is a single RGB value. Discord's role settings show it as a HEX code, and its API stores it as a decimal number, so #5865F2 and 5793266 mean the same color.
A member's name takes the color of their highest colored role. Roles with no color are skipped, which is how servers stack a colored "rank" role above plain permission roles. If a name shows the wrong color, a higher role is almost always the reason; Discord permissions explained covers role order in detail.
Two rules catch people out:
- Pure black is "no color".
#000000equals 0, which Discord reads as unset, so use#010101for black. - Readability depends on the theme. A dark navy that looks great in light mode can nearly vanish in dark mode. Check both previews before you commit.
Gradient role names
Servers with Discord's Enhanced Role Styles perk (3 Server Boosts, according to Discord's announcement) can give a role a gradient instead of a solid color. A gradient role has a primary and a secondary color and blends between them across the name. That's why the gradient mode here asks for two colors and gives you two HEX codes. The holographic style uses colors fixed by Discord, so there's nothing to pick.
Embed colors
An embed has one solid color, shown as the bar on its left edge. In JSON it's the decimal color field. Build a full embed with the Discord embed generator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I set a custom role color on Discord?
Open Server Settings → Roles, choose the role, and open its color settings. Pick the custom color option and paste a HEX code such as #5865F2. You need the Manage Roles permission, and you can only edit roles below your own highest role.
What's the difference between the HEX and decimal color codes?
They're the same color written two ways. Discord's role settings and most bot dashboards take HEX (#5865F2). Discord's API and embed JSON store colors as a decimal integer (5793266), which is why webhook and bot code often asks for the decimal number.
Why does my role color not show on my name?
Your name takes the color of your highest role that has a color set. Roles without a color are skipped. If a higher role has its own color, that one wins, so move the role up in the role list or remove the color from the role above it.
Can I make a Discord role black?
Not with pure #000000: Discord treats a color value of 0 as "no color", so the name falls back to the default. Use a near-black such as #010101 instead.
How do gradient role colors work on Discord?
Gradient and holographic names come from Discord's Enhanced Role Styles server perk, which Discord says costs 3 Server Boosts. A gradient blends from a start color to an end color across the name. Holographic uses a fixed set of colors chosen by Discord, so this tool previews solid and gradient styles only.
Can I use these colors for embeds?
Yes. Embeds use one solid color for the bar on their left edge. Copy the decimal value for embed JSON, or paste the HEX code into the Discord embed generator.
