A Discord jail bot isolates a member without kicking or banning them: it takes their roles, gives them a jail role that can only see one private channel, and gives everything back when staff release them. Better Tickets is a free Discord bot with jail built in, alongside tickets, staff applications and leveling. This page explains how jail compares with Discord's timeout and with a jail role you manage by hand, so you can pick what fits your server.
Jail bot vs. timeout vs. manual jail role
| Jail bot (Better Tickets) | Discord timeout | Manual jail role | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Member can still read the server | No | Yes | No, if the role is set up everywhere |
| Private channel to talk with staff | Yes, opened automatically | No | Only if you make one |
| Time limit | None, until released | Up to 28 days | None |
| Roles given back on release | Yes, automatically | Not needed, roles aren't touched | By hand, if you remember them |
| Re-applied if they leave and rejoin | Yes, optional | Yes, until it expires | No |
| Jail automatically on a word or pattern | Yes, auto-jail triggers | Through AutoMod only | No |
| Record of who jailed them and why | Yes, in the jail channel and logs | In the audit log | Only the audit log |
When a timeout is enough
A Discord timeout is built in and quick. Use it for a cooling-off period after a heated argument or a burst of spam, when you don't need to talk to the member. They can still read channels, so it isn't the right tool when you need to hide the server from them or have a conversation first.
When to jail instead
Jail fits when you need to talk to someone before deciding: a suspected alt account, a report you're investigating, or a member who broke a rule you'd rather explain than punish. The private jail channel gives you that conversation, and their roles are waiting for them when you release them.
How jail works in Better Tickets
Set up a jail category
On the dashboard's Jail page, create a jail category and pick the jail role. Sync role permissions hides every other channel from that role.
Jail a member
Run /jail member:@name reason:.... The bot removes their roles, gives them
the jail role and opens a private channel like #jail-name.
Release them
Run /unjail member:@name. They get back the roles jail took, keep any they
were given while jailed, and lose the jail role.
You can't jail someone whose highest role is the same as or above yours, and the bot needs Manage Roles with its role above the roles it changes.
Auto-jail triggers
Auto-jail triggers jail a member when one of their messages matches a word or a regular expression. Each trigger has its own reason, can delete the matching message, and can ignore roles and channels. Test patterns first with the free regex tester.
Keeping jail fair
Tell members what gets someone jailed, write a clear reason every time, and release them once it's resolved. The moderation and jail system guide covers when to warn, time out, jail or ban.
Set up jail in a few minutes with the jail docs, or add Better Tickets to your server.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Discord jail bot?
A bot that isolates a member without kicking or banning them. It removes their roles, gives them a jail role that can only see one private channel, and lets staff talk it through there. When they're released, the bot gives their roles back.
What's the difference between jail and a timeout?
A Discord timeout lasts up to 28 days and stops a member sending messages, reacting and joining voice, but they can still read the server. Jail hides the server from them and opens a private channel where staff can talk to them, and it has no time limit.
Does jailing someone lose their roles?
Not with Better Tickets. The roles it removes are saved, and /unjail gives them back. Roles they were given while jailed are kept too, and only the jail role is taken off.
Can a bot jail members automatically?
Better Tickets can. Auto-jail triggers jail a member when a message matches a word or regular expression you set, can delete the message, and skip roles and channels you choose.
What happens if a jailed member leaves and rejoins?
With auto-jail on rejoin turned on, Better Tickets puts them straight back in jail when they return, and can open a new jail channel if the old one is gone.
