How to make a jail role on Discord

By Better Tickets Team · Updated

To make a jail role on Discord, create a role with no permissions, deny it View Channel on every category, and create one private channel it can see. Then, when you jail someone, remove their other roles as well as adding the jail role, or they'll still see the server. This guide walks through the manual setup, explains that common mistake, and shows how a bot automates the whole thing.

Set up a jail role by hand

1

Create the role

In Server Settings → Roles, create a role called Jailed. Turn off every permission. Drag it above your normal member roles.

2

Hide the server from it

For each category, open Edit Category → Permissions, add the Jailed role and set View Channel to deny. Channels synced to the category inherit it. Repeat for any channel that isn't synced.

3

Create the jail channel

Make a #jail channel. Deny View Channel for @everyone, then allow View Channel, Send Messages and Read Message History for Jailed and your moderator role.

4

Jail someone

Remove the member's other roles, note which ones they were, and add Jailed. To release them, remove Jailed and give the roles back.

The mistake that breaks most jails

Many servers add the Jailed role and stop there, then find the member can still read half the server.

The reason is how Discord combines channel permissions. When a member has several roles with settings on the same channel, an allow from any of their roles beats a deny from another. So if a jailed member still has a Member or Level 10 role that's explicitly allowed to view a channel, the jail role's deny is overridden there.

There are two fixes:

  • Remove their other roles while they're jailed. This is the reliable one, and what jail bots do.
  • Avoid explicit allows for ordinary roles on channels, relying on @everyone instead. This is hard to keep up on a large server.

Discord permissions explained covers the full order in which Discord resolves permissions.

Problems with a manual jail

  • Roles get lost. Someone has to remember which roles to give back.
  • Leaving resets it. A member who leaves and rejoins comes back without the jail role.
  • One shared channel. Everyone jailed at once sees each other's cases.
  • New channels are exposed. Each new category needs the deny added.
  • No record. There's nothing to review later unless someone saves the conversation.

Automate it with Better Tickets

Better Tickets builds jail on its ticket system, so each jailed member gets their own private channel and transcript.

1

Link a jail category

In the dashboard, open Jail, create a jail category and link it.

2

Set the jail role

On the category's Roles tab, choose the role jailed members receive.

3

Sync permissions

Click Sync role permissions to deny View Channel and Send Messages for the jail role on every channel that doesn't already have a setting for it.

4

Jail with one command

/jail member:@riley reason:Spam in #general removes Riley's roles, stores them, adds the jail role and opens a private channel. /unjail gives back exactly the roles that were removed.

It also handles the cases a manual jail can't:

  • Rejoins. With auto-jail on rejoin, a jailed member who leaves and comes back is jailed again.
  • Safety checks. /jail refuses to run on someone whose highest role is equal to or above yours or the bot's.
  • Auto-jail triggers. Jail members automatically when a message matches a word list or regex. See AutoMod regex examples for patterns.
  • Records. Closing a jail channel saves a signed transcript.

Frequently asked questions

What is a jail role on Discord?

A role that hides every channel except one private jail channel. Staff give it to a member who broke the rules, so they can talk it through privately instead of banning straight away.

Why can a jailed member still see other channels?

Usually because they still have another role that's allowed to view those channels. On Discord, a role that allows a permission in a channel beats a different role that denies it. Remove their other roles while they're jailed.

Do I need a bot to make a jail?

No, you can set it up with roles and channel permissions. A bot makes it practical: it removes and restores roles, opens a channel per member, keeps a transcript and re-jails people who leave and rejoin.

What's the difference between a jail and a timeout?

A timeout mutes a member everywhere for up to 28 days but leaves no place to talk to them. A jail hides the server and gives them a private channel with staff.

Can jailed members escape by leaving and rejoining?

With a manual setup, yes: roles are lost when someone leaves. Better Tickets can re-apply the jail automatically when a jailed member rejoins.
