To find a Discord ID, turn on Developer Mode in User Settings → Advanced, then right-click (or long-press on mobile) a user, server, channel, role or message and choose Copy ID. Every ID is a "snowflake" that also records when it was created, so a user ID tells you how old an account is. This guide covers where to find IDs, what they're used for, and how to read the date inside them.
Turn on Developer Mode
Open settings
Click the gear icon next to your name (desktop or web), or tap your profile picture (mobile).
Go to Advanced
Under App Settings, open Advanced.
Turn on Developer Mode
The switch adds Copy ID options to Discord's menus. It doesn't change anything else.
Copy an ID
| ID | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| User | Right-click their name or avatar → Copy User ID |
| Server | Right-click the server icon → Copy Server ID |
| Channel | Right-click the channel → Copy Channel ID |
| Role | Server Settings → Roles, right-click a role → Copy Role ID |
| Message | Hover the message, open More (⋯) → Copy Message ID |
On mobile, long-press instead of right-clicking.
What Discord IDs are used for
- Bots and dashboards. Settings store IDs, not names, so they keep working when someone renames a channel or changes their username.
- Mentions in messages.
<@USER_ID>,<#CHANNEL_ID>and<@&ROLE_ID>mention a user, channel or role. Better Tickets' message variables like{{author.userId}}use the same IDs. - Reports and appeals. Moderators and Discord's Trust & Safety team ask for IDs because usernames change.
- Message links. A message link contains the server, channel and message IDs.
What an ID tells you
Every Discord ID is a snowflake: a 64-bit number whose highest 42 bits are the number of milliseconds since the Discord epoch, the first moment of 2015. The rest are internal counters. So any ID can be turned back into the exact time it was created:
created (Unix ms) = (id >> 22) + 1420070400000Paste an ID into the Discord ID to date tool to do this instantly. The most common use is checking account age: an account created minutes before it joined your server and started spamming is a classic raid account. How to protect a Discord server from raids covers what to do about them.
An ID doesn't contain anything private. There's no email, IP address or location in it, only the creation time and Discord's internal counters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get someone's Discord ID?
Turn on Developer Mode in User Settings → Advanced, then right-click their name (or long-press on mobile) and choose Copy User ID.
Is a Discord ID the same as a username?
No. A username can change; the ID never does. That's why bots, logs and moderation tools rely on IDs.
Can someone find me with my Discord ID?
An ID only identifies your account and when it was created. It doesn't contain your email, IP address or location.
How can I tell how old a Discord account is?
Paste the account's user ID into the Discord ID to date tool. The ID was created with the account, so its timestamp is the account's creation date.
Why do Discord IDs have so many digits?
They're 64-bit numbers. Most of the bits store a timestamp in milliseconds, which is what makes them unique and sortable by time.
