To close a Discord ticket, click the ticket's Close button or run the bot's close command inside the ticket channel. What happens next depends on your bot's settings: most save a transcript and delete the channel, and some can keep the channel for later. This guide covers who should be able to close tickets, why to give a reason, the close options in Better Tickets, and how to fix a ticket that won't close.
What closing a ticket should do
A ticket is just a private channel, so "closing" really means three things:
- End the conversation. The member shouldn't keep posting in a finished ticket.
- Keep a record. Save a transcript before anything is deleted.
- Tidy up. Delete or archive the channel so staff only see open work.
Deleting the channel by hand does the third and skips the other two, which is why a close command matters.
Close a ticket in Better Tickets
Go to the ticket channel
Close works on the channel you run it in.
Click Close or run /close
Add a reason if you like: /close reason:Refund issued, confirmed by member. The Close button opens a short form for the reason instead.
Let the bot finish
With the default setting, Better Tickets saves a signed transcript, posts a link to it in your transcript channel (and the member's DMs if enabled), then deletes the channel.
Always give a reason
The reason is included in the transcript summary, so anyone reviewing it later knows how the ticket ended. You can make it required: on the category's General tab, the close form's reason field can be set as mandatory.
Choose what closing does
Each ticket category has a Close behaviour on its Automation tab:
| Setting | What happens | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Close, transcript, and delete | Transcript saved, channel deleted | Most support tickets (the default) |
| Close (not delete) | Channel stays, member loses access, staff get Delete, Transcript and Reopen buttons | Members often come back about the same issue |
| Close and delete, no transcript | Channel deleted, nothing saved | Low-stakes tickets you don't need records of |
Details are in ticket settings: automation.
Decide who can close
By default, a category's staff roles can close its tickets. The Close button has its own permissions on the Buttons tab:
- Allow the ticket author lets members close their own tickets.
- Allowed roles adds roles that can close alongside staff.
- Restrict to allowed roles only limits closing to those roles, for example senior staff.
- Disabled roles blocks roles from closing, such as trial moderators.
Close tickets automatically
You don't have to close everything by hand. Better Tickets can close a ticket when the member stops replying or leaves the server. See how to auto-close inactive Discord tickets.
If a ticket won't close
- "You don't have permissions." You're not in the category's staff roles, or the Close button is restricted. Ask an admin.
- The bot says it's missing a permission. It needs Manage Channels to delete the channel and access to the transcript channel.
- The transcript didn't post. Check the transcript channel still exists and the bot can send messages there.
- Closed by mistake. With Close (not delete), click Reopen. Otherwise, see how to reopen a closed ticket.
Frequently asked questions
How do I close a ticket on Discord?
Use your ticket bot's close button or command inside the ticket channel. In Better Tickets, click Close or run /close, optionally with a reason. The bot then saves a transcript and deletes the channel, or keeps it, depending on the category's close behavior.
Can a member close their own ticket?
Only if the server allows it. In Better Tickets, the Close button is for staff by default; turn on Allow the ticket author on that button to let members close their own tickets.
What happens to a ticket when it's closed?
It depends on the setting. Better Tickets can save a transcript and delete the channel, keep the channel with the member's access removed, or delete it without a transcript.
Can I close a ticket without deleting it?
Yes. Set the category's close behavior to Close (not delete). The member loses access and staff get Delete, Transcript and Reopen buttons.
Why can't I close a ticket?
You probably aren't in that category's staff roles, or the Close button is limited to other roles. Admins with Administrator or Manage Server can always close.
