To hand a Discord ticket to someone else, use release and claim for a teammate, or escalate to move the ticket to a different team's category. Escalating keeps the same channel and history, so the member never has to explain the problem twice. This guide covers when to use each, how to hand off cleanly, and how /escalate works in Better Tickets.
Transfer, escalate or add: which one?
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| A teammate on the same team should take over | Release your claim so they can claim it |
| A different team needs to own the ticket | Escalate it to their category |
| One extra person needs to weigh in | Add them to the ticket |
| A report turns into a moderation case | Escalate it into the jail category |
Hand off to a teammate
If the ticket stays with the same team, ownership is all that changes:
- The current owner runs
/release(or clicks Unclaim). - The new owner runs
/claim.
Only the person who claimed a ticket, or someone with Manage Server, can release it. Discord ticket claiming explained covers why claims matter.
Escalate to another team
Summarize first
Post one message with what's been tried and what's needed. The new team shouldn't have to read the whole ticket to start.
Run /escalate
In the ticket channel, run /escalate category:billing and pick the destination category.
Let the new team take it
The ticket now belongs to the new category: its staff roles get access and can claim it. The bot posts a message saying where the ticket moved from and to.
What changes when you escalate
- Staff access switches to the new category's staff roles.
- The channel and its messages stay, so nothing is lost.
- A notice is posted, which you can customize under Messages → Escalated with variables for the old and new category.
- A short cooldown applies before the same ticket can be escalated again, to stop it bouncing between teams.
You can't escalate a ticket to the category it's already in.
Escalate into or out of jail
When a ticket shows a member needs more than a conversation, staff can escalate it to the jail category. Better Tickets then removes the member's roles, applies the jail role and stores what was removed, exactly as /jail does. Escalating back to a normal category restores their roles.
The same safety rules apply: you can't escalate someone into jail whose highest role is equal to or above yours, or the server owner. Setup is in the jail docs.
Hand off without frustrating the member
- Tell them what's happening: "I'm passing this to our billing team, they'll reply here."
- Don't make them repeat themselves. That's the whole point of keeping the channel.
- Escalate once. If a ticket has moved twice, a lead should own it.
- Set up categories by team, not by topic, so "who handles this" always has one answer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I transfer a ticket to another staff member on Discord?
If they're on the same team, release your claim so they can claim it. In Better Tickets, run /release and let them /claim. If they're on a different team, escalate the ticket to that team's category with /escalate.
What does escalating a ticket do?
It moves the ticket to a different category, so that category's staff take over. In Better Tickets the same channel and its history are kept, and the member doesn't have to open a new ticket.
Who can escalate a ticket?
Staff of the ticket's current category, and admins with Administrator or Manage Server.
Does the member lose their messages when a ticket is escalated?
No. The conversation stays in the same channel, so the new team can read everything that was already said.
Can I escalate a ticket into the jail?
Yes. Escalating to the jail category removes the member's roles and applies the jail role, the same as /jail. Escalating back to a normal category restores their roles.
