You can reopen a closed Discord ticket only if its channel still exists. Most ticket bots delete the channel on close, which makes reopening impossible. To allow it, close tickets without deleting them: in Better Tickets, set a category's close behavior to Close (not delete), and every closed ticket gets a Reopen button. This guide covers how to set that up, who can reopen, and what to do if the channel is already gone.
Why reopening beats a new ticket
- The history is right there. Nobody has to re-explain or dig up a transcript.
- The same staff member can pick it up, already knowing the case.
- Follow-ups stay together, which makes repeat problems easy to spot.
It suits servers where members often come back about the same issue, such as orders, bug reports and appeals.
Turn on reopenable tickets
Open the category's settings
In the dashboard, go to Tickets → Panels → Configure.
Change the close behavior
On the Automation tab, set Close behaviour to Close (not delete).
Decide how long to keep them
Optionally set Auto-delete after, so a kept ticket nobody reopens is deleted (with a transcript) after that time.
What a kept-open close looks like
When a ticket in that category is closed:
- The member loses access: they can no longer view or send messages in the channel.
- The channel stays for staff.
- The bot posts a close message with three buttons: Delete, Transcript and Reopen.
No transcript is made at this point. Staff can click Transcript to generate one, or Delete to remove the channel.
Reopen a ticket
Click Reopen on the close message. Better Tickets gives the member their access back, pings them to say the ticket was reopened and by whom, and marks the old close message as no longer active.
Who can reopen
The Reopen button has its own settings on the category's Buttons tab:
- By default, the category's staff roles can use it.
- Allow the ticket author lets members reopen their own tickets.
- Allowed roles, Restrict to allowed roles only and Disabled roles narrow it further.
Which buttons appear on the close message is set on the Messages tab, under Close message (kept open).
If the channel was deleted
A deleted channel can't be restored by any bot. Instead:
- Find the transcript in your transcript channel.
- Ask the member to open a new ticket.
- Link the transcript in the new ticket so staff have the background.
Discord ticket transcripts explains how they're stored and for how long.
Should every category keep tickets open?
No. Kept channels count toward Discord's limit of 500 channels per server, and a list of closed tickets gets cluttered. Use Close (not delete) where follow-ups are common, set Auto-delete after so they don't pile up, and leave quick-question categories on the default delete behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Can you reopen a closed ticket on Discord?
Only if the channel still exists. If your bot closes tickets by deleting the channel, it can't be reopened. In Better Tickets, set the category's close behavior to Close (not delete) and closed tickets get a Reopen button.
How do I reopen a ticket in Better Tickets?
Click Reopen on the close message in the ticket channel. The member gets their access back and is pinged to say the ticket is open again.
Who can reopen a ticket?
By default, the ticket category's staff roles. The Reopen button has its own permission settings, so you can also allow the ticket author or limit it to certain roles.
What if the ticket channel was already deleted?
It can't be brought back. Ask the member to open a new ticket and use the old ticket's transcript for context.
How long do closed tickets stay before they're deleted?
As long as you choose. With Close (not delete), you can set Auto-delete after so kept tickets are removed, with a transcript, once that time passes.
