How to add someone to a Discord ticket

By Better Tickets Team · Updated

To add someone to a Discord ticket, run the ticket bot's add command in the ticket channel, such as /add member:@user in Better Tickets. Without a bot, open the channel's permissions, add the member and allow View Channel. Either way, the person can then see and reply in that one ticket without becoming staff. This guide covers both methods, what access they get, and how to remove them again.

When to add someone to a ticket

  • A witness or the other party in a report.
  • A specialist, such as a developer or billing admin, who isn't on the support team.
  • A friend helping the member explain an issue.
  • A parent or team captain in community and esports servers.

Add only who's needed. A ticket is private because the member expects it to be.

Add a member with Better Tickets

1

Open the ticket channel

The command works on the channel you run it in.

2

Run /add

/add member:@riley gives Riley access to this ticket.

3

Check the confirmation

The bot posts a message in the ticket saying who was added and by whom, so the member knows a new person can see the conversation.

The added member gets View Channel, Send Messages, Attach Files and Read Message History in that ticket only. They can read everything said before they joined.

You can change the message the bot posts under Messages → Member added in the category's settings, and it supports variables such as the name of the person added.

Remove a member

/remove member:@riley takes away their access and posts a confirmation. The person who opened the ticket can't be removed; close the ticket instead.

Add someone without a bot

1

Open channel permissions

Right-click the ticket channel → Edit Channel → Permissions.

2

Add the member

Click + next to roles and members, and pick the person.

3

Allow access

Set View Channel and Send Messages to allow, then save.

This works, but there's no notice in the ticket and no record of who added whom. You need the Manage Channels or Manage Permissions permission on that channel to do it.

Who can add and remove people

In Better Tickets, /add and /remove are limited to the ticket category's staff roles, plus admins with Administrator or Manage Server. Staff roles are set per category, so support staff can't add people to tickets in a category they don't handle.

If a whole team needs access rather than one person, don't add them one by one. Either add their role to the category's staff roles, or escalate the ticket to the category that team handles.
