Voice channels for Discord tickets

By Better Tickets Team · Updated

A ticket voice channel is a temporary, private voice channel attached to one ticket, so staff and a member can talk or share a screen without anyone else joining. It's created on request and deleted when the ticket closes. This guide covers when voice helps, how to keep it under control, and how to set it up in Better Tickets.

When voice beats text

  • Screen sharing a bug or a settings problem is faster than ten screenshots.
  • Staff interviews, straight from an application's ticket.
  • Complicated disputes, where tone matters.
  • Accessibility, for members who find typing hard.

Text is still better for anything you need on record, because calls aren't saved.

What a good setup needs

  1. Privacy. Only the ticket's member and its staff can join.
  2. Control. Staff decide when a call happens.
  3. Cleanup. The channel disappears with the ticket.
  4. A written summary. Whatever was agreed in voice gets typed into the ticket.

Set up ticket voice channels in Better Tickets

1

Open the Voice tab

In the dashboard, go to Tickets → Panels → Configure → Voice for the category.

2

Choose the voice channel mode

Off disables it, Staff only lets staff request a channel, and Ticket author lets the member request one as well.

3

Pick a VC category

Choose the Discord category where the temporary voice channels are created.

4

Show the button

On the Messages tab, add the VC request button to the ticket's opening message. Its text, color, emoji and allowed roles are set on the Buttons tab.

How a request works

  1. Someone clicks VC request in the ticket.
  2. The bot posts a prompt with Approve and Deny buttons for staff.
  3. On approval, a private voice channel is created for that ticket.
  4. When the ticket closes, the voice channel is deleted.

Requests go through approval even when a staff member asks, so there's always a visible record in the ticket that a call was started. Members can only request again after a cooldown, which stops repeated pings.

Control who can do what

The three voice buttons, VC request, VC approve and VC deny, each have their own permissions on the Buttons tab. For example, you can let any support staff approve calls, or keep approval for senior staff only. If voice is turned off for a category, the request button stays visible and explains why it can't be used, so members aren't left guessing.

The ticket settings reference lists every option.

Good habits for ticket calls

  • Ask before calling. Not everyone can or wants to talk.
  • Summarize in text before closing: what was decided and what happens next.
  • Don't record without everyone's clear agreement, and check the laws that apply to you.
  • Keep it optional. A member who prefers text should get the same help.

Voice channels aren't available on jail tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Discord ticket have a voice channel?

Yes. A ticket bot can create a temporary private voice channel that only the ticket's member and staff can join. Better Tickets does this through a VC request button on the ticket.

Who can request a voice channel in a ticket?

That's up to the category's voice channel mode: Off, Staff only, or Ticket author. With Ticket author, the member can request one too.

Does someone have to approve the voice channel?

In Better Tickets, yes. A request posts an Approve and Deny prompt for staff, whether the member or a staff member asked.

What happens to the voice channel when the ticket closes?

It's deleted. Voice channels are always removed when their ticket closes.

Are voice calls included in the ticket transcript?

No. Transcripts only contain the ticket's text messages, so write a short summary of the call in the ticket before you close it.
