Most new Discord servers set up channels and roles first, then bolt on support and recruitment systems weeks later once the volume of "how do I get help" DMs makes it unavoidable. Doing it in the other order, setting up the systems before they're urgently needed, avoids the scramble.
1. Support: a ticket category before you need one
A pinned "DM a mod" instruction doesn't scale past a handful of members. Set up one ticket category, even a single generic "support" category, before launch:
Invite the bot
With the Manage Server permission.
Create and configure a category
Dashboard's Tickets → Panels → New category. Set a staff role and an open category, the only two required fields.
Send the panel
Via the category's own Send panel button, or the Message builder.
Full walkthrough: Quickstart.
2. Recruitment: applications, if you'll ever need staff or roles by application
If the server plans to recruit staff, a creative team, or any role gated by an application rather than self-assignment, set up an application category at the same time as tickets, both are configured the same way (create → configure → send panel), so there's no extra setup model to learn.
3. Engagement: leveling, if activity should mean something
A server with no leveling system has no way to recognize a member who's been active for six months versus someone who joined yesterday. Leveling with role rewards tied to specific levels gives long-term members visible status without staff manually assigning it.
4. Roleplay commands, for community-flavored servers
Not every server needs this, a strictly professional or support-focused server can skip it, but a community or gaming-flavored server benefits from roleplay commands as a low-effort way for members to interact directly instead of only reacting to announcements.
5. Moderation: a jail category before the first real incident
Set up jail before the first serious moderation incident, not during it. It reuses the ticket system, so if step 1 is done, this is mostly linking an existing category and setting a jail role.
6. Custom prefixes, only if mobile use or migration habits call for it
Optional, and worth adding only if the server is mobile-heavy or migrating members from a prefix-only bot. See Custom prefixes for how to set one up.
